Audemars Piguet x Swatch

The collaboration no one saw coming!
The Royal Oak is one of the most copied watches on earth. The octagonal bezel, the exposed screws, the bracelet that flows straight out of the case. Audemars Piguet has been making it since 1972, and for most of us it has always lived behind glass, on a waitlist, somewhere just out of reach. It’s basically the Hermès of watches, just more expensive and exclusive.
So, when AP announced it was teaming up with Swatch, the brand that put Swiss watchmaking in everyone’s pocket for a few hundred pounds, that was already a surprise. The genuinely surprising part came next. It wasn’t a watch for your wrist at all.
It was a pocket watch. In 2026.
No one thought this would work. The pocket watch is the most retired object in menswear, the thing your great grandfather wore and nobody since. And yet taking the most untouchable design in watchmaking and dropping it into the most forgotten format is exactly why it landed. Royal Pop, as they’ve called it, isn’t trying to be a Royal Oak you can finally afford. It’s something else entirely. A forgotten icon turned into an accessory, made to hang off your bag instead of sitting politely on your wrist.

And people lost it. Stores all over the world had to shut their doors over the crowds, most for the safety of staff and customers. That alone tells you something. You don’t close shops over a watch anyone can walk in and buy. The access was nowhere near the demand, and the resale market clocked it right away. A watch that costs a few hundred pounds was listed for thousands within hours, and my TikTok is already full of people reselling theirs for triple what they paid. The value has gone up before most of us have even seen one in person.
But there’s something nobody’s really talking about. Swatch still hasn’t said when it’s going to stop making these. Nobody actually knows if this is a limited edition or not. There’s no final number, no end date, nothing. And that vagueness is doing all the work. As long as nobody knows how rare it actually is, nobody feels safe waiting, and the hype never gets a chance to cool off. The real chaos will come the day they finally admit it’s ending. And that’s why this watch is already a great investment.
Because that’s the whole trick of Royal Pop. It took the one design everyone already wanted and put it in the one place nobody thought to look. An icon, in your pocket. I feel like nobody saw that coming.
